Systems and control theories use sophisticated operator theoretical methods. They also provide new ideas and problems in operator theory. As a consequence, the biannual MTNS (Mathematical Theory of Networks and Systems) conference is attended by many operator theorists. At the initiative of J.W. Helton and I. Gohberg, an International Workshop on Operator Theory and Applications (IWOTA) has been organized since the early 80s, as a satellite of MTNS. The articles in this volume originated from the IWOTA conference held at Indiana University, Bloomington, in June 1996. They represent most of the areas that were discussed at the workshop with some emphasis on modern interpolation theory, a topic which has seen much progress in recent years. The contributions were, as usual, subject to a thorough refereeing process and will bring the reader to the forefront of current research in this area.

The key to unlocking these deeper properties is the characterization of the screened spaces in terms of interpolation theory, specifically the real method of abstract interpolation (see [BL76 Author: Alessandra Lunardi.

The book is an advanced textbook and a reference text in functional analysis in the wide sense. It provides advanced undergraduate and graduate students with a coherent introduction to the field, i.e. the basic principles, and leads them to more demanding topics such as the spectral theorem, Choquet theory, interpolation theory, analysis of. In this second edition, the principles of interpolation theory are illustrated aiming at simplification rather than at generality. The abstract theory is reduced as far as possible, and many examples and applications are given, especially to operator theory and to regularity in partial differential equations.4/5(1).

This is an excellent course in operator theory and operator algebras leads the reader to deep new results and modern research topics the author has done more than just write a good book—he has managed to reveal the unspeakable charm of the subject, which is indeed the ‘source of happiness’ for operator theorists. In the theory of interpolation of operators, Marcinkiewicz' interpolation theorem on interpolation operators of weak type plays an important role.

An operator from a Banach space into a space of measurable functions, e.g. on the semi-axis, is called an operator of weak type if. It is assumed here that and are non-decreasing functions (e.g.,). The principal lecturer, J. William Helton, presented ten lectures on operator and systems theory and the interplay between them.

The conference was very stimulating and helped us to decide that the time was ripe for a book on interpolation for Cited by: Topics in Modern Operator Theory: 5th International Conference on Operator Theory, Timisoara and Herculane (Romania), JuneBook 1 The first of the annual Operator Theory conferences in Ti- mi~oara held four years ago was a meeting of operator theory.

In this chapter, we consider some fundamental principles of the general theory for nonlinear operator interpolation. Interpolating operators are naturally connected to modelling of nonlinear systems. If a system is given by finite sets of input-output signals, then interpolating operator provides a model of such a system.

$\begingroup$ I think that it is hard to appreciate functional analysis without some prior background in point-set topology, measure theory, complex analysis, and Fourier analysis. A knowledge of the theory of partial differential equations is also very useful.

In simple problems, this method is unlikely to be used, as linear interpolation (see below) is almost as easy, but in higher-dimensional multivariate interpolation, this could be a favourable choice for its speed and simplicity.
